Luxury and Exclusivity on the Island of Lanai

As one of the smallest islands among the Hawaiian isles, Lanai is a place that few know about and even fewer live on, truly making it one of Hawaii’s best kept secrets. Quaint yet fully equipped with everything you’d expect from both a tropical paradise and a fully functioning town, the island feels like a small village in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. But, what else makes this island so special?

Lanai

A Secluded, Dreamlike Utopia

With an area of around 140 square miles and a population of just over 3,000, Lanai is the smallest inhabited island in the Hawaiian archipelago accessible to the public. In 2012, Larry Ellison purchased 98 percent of the island with the goal of investing hundreds of millions of dollars to build on existing infrastructure and industry in order to turn Lanai into an environmentally-friendly agricultural oasis. Located between the islands of Molokai and Maui, Lanai can be accessed only by boat or by small plane from a neighboring island and most of the island’s sights require a ride on a 4-wheeler to get to. With Lanai City as the island’s only significant settlement, Lanai boasts beautiful remote beaches as well as 400 miles of dirt roads that weave all over the island, through rainforests and all the way to the island’s highest peak, Mount Lanaihale. You certainly won’t run into hoards or tourists or selfie-stick obstructed views here.

The Perfect Mix of Luxury and Charm

If you are looking to visit Lanai, the island offers three hotel options that give you the choice between old Hawaii charm and two Four Seasons resorts. Each hotel offers a different experience and exposes guests to the island’s different personalities, from a historical cottage to a beachside resort to a lodge nestled among the island’s rolling hills and lush gardens. A short stay at each provides you with the perfect mix of authentic Lanai and more modern luxuries, all the while exposing you to the island’s natural beauty. Previously home to the world’s largest pineapple plantation, Lanai has opened up in recent years to more tourism, but remains a private and little known getaway for mainlanders and locals alike. The island’s three beautiful golf courses also attract sportsmen, as well as big names like Bill Gates, who was married at The Challenge at Manele course. One school serves the entire island, contributing to the sense of community and intimacy on Lanai. While the island does provide guests with luxury, it also maintains its small town charm; Lanai has no traffic lights, no shopping malls, and very little traffic as all public transportation is provided by the hotels. The best way to explore the island is on foot, by bike, or by an off-road vehicle that will take you to some of Lanai’s most beautiful hikes and viewpoints. In reality, the biggest attraction is the experience itself, providing you with an exclusive, private place to relax, enjoy, and experience all the beauty that Hawaii has to offer.
