Waldorf Wins Mitsubishi Championship

Duffy Waldorf has won the Mitsubishi Electric Championship in dramatic fashion beating out Tom Lehman. The event was held at the Hualalai Resort, a crown jewel of five-star destinations and the site of the first match of the Champions Tour. The resort is located on the Kona-Kohala Coast on the big island of Hawaii. With undulating palms hiding the rooftops of charming bungalows as well as homes of chic contemporary design, the resort tries to capture the essence of the “old Hawaii” of peoples’ dreams. The match itself was played on a Jack Nicklaus-designed course, which uses the rugged, natural landscape to its advantage, with green fairways winding through volcanic outcroppings, and lending dramatic ocean views from the greens.

The 43-player field for this leg of the Tour of Champions included nine members from the PGA Hall of Fame with 2015 Player of the Year and Charles Schwab Cup champ Bernhard Langer of Germany, who was also the 2014 Mitsubishi victor. Last year’s winner, Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain, returned but failed to defend his title.

While all eyes were on Langer, who’s been the most dominant player on the Champions Tour for several years, Waldorf pulled off the upset by playing all 54 holes without a bogey. He’s taking home $300,000 out of the total $1.8 million payout.
